From the download:
"Effect: This is the same old chestnut wherein a spectator mentally selects a card and the cardician, or supposed mentalist, finds it after the usual preliminary deals. Frankly, we have never particularly liked the trick, let alone the old method where numerous deals are necessary to arrive at the thought-of card. The version which is about to be described was devised in self-defense against those individuals who, after seeing some one do card tricks, invariably say: "Have you ever seen this one?" and then without fail deal out the familiar three rows of cards.
Even among magicians this particular trick has at one time or another been performed in exactly the same manner and method. Probably the reason for this is because they, like the layman, have no idea why it works. Therefore, they continue to do it in the way Professor Hoffman described it. Or perhaps they enjoy the mathematical computations behind the effect. Too bad their audiences don't share the same views.
Combining common sense, observation, psychological principles, a bit of audacity, the Twenty One Card Trick can become a trick that at times will floor even the hardboiled "I've seen all the tricks" type of card man. As a matter of fact, this attitude almost insures the success of the effect from the very beginning."
