Houdini Expose on Margery by Harry Houdini - Book
During the fabulous career of Harry Houdini (1874-1926) he used his influence to exert enormous pressure against the rise of fraudulent spirit mediums. These mediums took advantage of the trust people put in them and used their client's grief to manipulate and swindle them out of enormous sums of money. Since most of these frauds used techniques very similar to that of a magician, Houdini knew how it worked and would publicly expose them. He was very successful in his drive on unscrupulous mediums. Publicity minded organizations and individuals put up large sums of money on these challenges, and of course everyone involved received plenty of public notice.
In this book—originally titled Houdini Exposes the Tricks Used by the Boston Medium "Margery" to Win the $2500 Prize Offered by the Scientific American—Houdini debunked the claims of the spiritualist Mina Crandon; who claimed to demonstrate genuine psychic abilities and tried to claim the prize for doing so offered by Scientific American. Houdini also covers a number of personal experiences in this book, as well as the odd methods used by mediums to convince their patrons that they can contact the dead. It makes up to an interesting document, written by one of the most famous names in our profession.
