150 Puzzles in Crypt-Arithmetic by Maxey Brooke - Book
This is a collection of arithmetical puzzles which operate by substituting letters for
numbers. They are solved by examination of the number relations between the various
groups and symbols. This puzzle type, which the author calls a "cryptarithm," is one
of the most interesting of mathematical recreations, since it combines the challenge
of the mathematical problem with that of cryptanalysis. Although it is one of the
standard ingredients of puzzle collections, no book devoted exclusively to this type
of problem has ever appeared before.
For the benefit of newcomers to this sort of puzzle, the author explains clearly how
to go about tackling it, and even works out the first four problems in detail. Solutions
for all the problems appear in the answer section. The puzzles are stated carefully
and accurately, and almost one third of the solutions are fully worked out, analyzing al
the mathematics and reasoning involved. The problemist need not fear the bewilderment that sometimes arises when problems or solutions are carelessly or clumsily worded.
Most of these cryptarithms are entirely new and will not be found in any other book,
while some of them are outstanding and familiar examples of the genre. The collection has great variety both in type and level: the problems call into play all the various processes of arithmetic, and they range all the way from the relatively simple to the highly complex.
The book offers hours of stimulating entertainment for anyone who enjoys using his
wits to solve problems. Puzzle enthusiasts who in the past have regretted the scarcity
of this type of problem in puzzle collections, will welcome this new book-the first
collection of "cryptarithms."
